The map to the left shows my Wortman line through time. Just put your
mouse on a date or red dot and you can learn more about the family at that
location. There are other Wortman lines that stem from places such as New
Brunswick, New Jersey and Ohio. It's too soon to know if any of these lines
connect. If you want to learn more about all Wortmans (not just my line),

Daniel D. Wortman's father, Milton Lad Wortman died when he was only 6 months old. He was raised by a foster family. He served in the Civil War where he became disabled. He lost most of the use of his eyes due the the poor diet of hard tacks and coffee during the war - no vegetables.
Life was hard for the Wortman's in Nebraska. They lived in sod houses and endured harsh winters. Many of Daniel and John Wortman's children were born there. The weather was so harsh that John Murray Wortman actually walked from Nebraska to Oregon. His brother Daniel followed, probably by a much saner mode of transportation.
Each year, descendants of John Murray Wortman and Lydia Ann Etchison get together for the Wortman Cousins Picnic. Often they camp for the week at Lostine River
